Raspberry cultivars

Gifted cultivar

A daughter gave us some raspberry plants, the best we knew they were “June-bearing”, which means they fruit and ripen early in the summer. We don't know more specifically the cultivar so we waited to see their native color and habit.

Added cultivar

It happened that we had some extra space in the raspberry bed so I transplanted three, named Willamette, from Fred Meyer. F

From experience in their first fruiting, we found that they did put on some fruit in the fall, though only a few, which we didn't notice right away. This suggests that that cultivar is “ever bearing,” meaning their habit is to fruit in the summer and the fall. Perhaps, next season will tell whether early corps are better than later. This information is relevant to understanding the most effective way to prune the canes once they are dormant.

Anyway, during June and July of 2025 we enjoyed lots of vine-ripe raspberries resulting from transplanting early in 2024. The vines grew vigorously and gave us numerous small but delicious fruits.
