9 plants to start
I transplanted 9 plants to the Fall City farm: 3 each of Farthest North, Oregon Delicious and Minnesota Minis.

Individual covers
Slug and insect pressure was strong and I wanted to keep the soil warm so I used individual covers.

9 plants at the Fall City garden
I transplanted 3 of each variety (Farthest North, Oregon Delicious, and Minnesota Minis) to our downtown Fall City garden.

Three survivors
Only 3 plants survived at the farm, one Farthest North and two Oregon Delicious. Probably slugs got one, another just wilted and some just disappeared.

Severe leaf wilt
At the FC garden several plants (Farthest North and Oregon Delicious) suffered a severe wilting of most leaves. The vines seemed healthy so I left fruit on the vines.

Severe leaf wilt
A closeup of the dying leaves. It wasn't too little water, but I don't know the cause.

Some melons holding on
I thought some of the Oregon Delicious might ripen their fruit, but they didn't hang on long enough.

Melons at the FC farm
The vines looked good and the Oregon Delicious put on large melons. The single Farthest North vine held six 4-inch melons, that had a nice flavor.

Oregon Delicious
The Oregon Delicious at the farm kept right on ripening the melons. Strange that in this clay soil they did so well.

Root of Farthest North
A closeup of the Farthest North at the FC garden. I couldn't see anything wrong with it. I thought these would like the sandy loam.

Oregon Delicious at the farm
The Oregon Delicious has pretty color leaves and blooms. The melons were growing lots larger than I expected (ripening at 8 inches).

Farthest North at the FC garden
Even though leaves wilted the vines appeared to feed the fruit. I harvested these Farthest North melons - they had a nice, subtle flavor.

Oregon Delicious at the farm
These 3 Oregon Delicious melons got to a nice size. The slugs attacked when they were almost ripe.

Oregon Delicious melon
This was the surprise of the season - a real cantaloupe grown in the lower Snoqualmie valley. Good flavor, though this one may have been picked a bit green. I had no experience in judging ripeness of melons.

Melons in sandy loam
All the plants struggled in the sandy loam. Some had a severe leaf wilt that I couldn't account for. Even in the same hill where there were two plants, one was affected and the other not.
