2015: the next year I've been waiting for

So much was less than par in 2014 that early on I was saying, “Wait till next year!” So here it is and what am I going to do differently?

As the rain dribbles down the gutter spout I contemplate weather that will allow typical planting, not delayed like last year. And I can already see that I'm able to focus on planning sooner rather than watching the latest downpour. I have the low tents and the hoop house already.

Got it down pat this year!

I learned so much in previous years of gardening I was ready to hit the soil running with germination in the greenhouse, a full cycle of potting and hardening out followed by transplanting. And I was ready to stretch a bit and grow more plants and add some tools to my tool bucket.

More use of low tents and row covers.

I added a low tent to the Garden to extend the growing season and to improve growing of heat-loving plants. Also, I increased the use of row covers to get a quicker start on the glowing season.

A recurring challenge

At the farm I grow mostly cucurbits (summer and winter squash, pumpkins, and melons). In previous years I noticed that melons in particular would some of the time wilt and die before any fruit matured. I looked without success for causes and cures. There was a suggestion in one website that this can be caused by cucumber beetles who transmit a harmful bacterium to the plant's internal systems that slows down the flow of moisture and nutrients. The page included some …

Winter gardening

I experimented at the end of 2020 in a way that I hadn't expected. I wanted to decide if any crop was effectively grown in the hoop house during the winter. I chose an easy trial - lettuces and spinach. I expected these would grow, but that it would be a very slow process from seeding to harvest. The hoop house remained closed and the growing areas blanketed in row cover. I did everything I knew of to maintain warmth..

Grape plants

My very first gardening effort was transplanting the grape plants I had rooted in Snoqualmie. The slow growth of these normally vigorous plants was disconcerting - grape plants aren't generally sensitive to the quality of the soil. Eventually by mid-July the first buds appeared.

Native soil

Early views of the 5 acres of grasses ranging from wetland to buffer varieties appeared to be amenable to finding a relatively small garden plot for vegetables, though we imagined some challenges.
While we were still living in the trailer we attempted to grow tomatoes and pole beans in the native soil. The results were disappointing - early summer didn't provide enough heat to satisfy tomatoes and both…

Soil

Without soil where would an organic gardener be? Only in the soil do we have the opportunity to provide the full range of nutrients, organic matter, fungi, bacteria and micro-organisms that make healthy vegetables.

Articles in this topic relate to the physical composition of soil and to the indefinable quality of fertility.
