Special handling for cool-weather plants

Temperature setting

For seeds that prefer a low temperature to germinate, I don't turn on the controller for the heat mat. For other cool-weather plants I set the heat mat controller at its lowest level of 65 degrees.

Special handling for heat-loving plants

Heat mat setting

When I germinate seeds for heat-loving plants like peppers and tomatoes, I set the heat mat controller at a suitable level, generally 75 degrees.

Grow lights

These warm-weather plants like warmth as they grow in the greenhouse. Grow lights set at a suitable distance (about 7 inches) from the seedlings provide an acceptable amount of warmth.

No germination greenhouse

I no longer have a greenhouse and space for an (expensive) grow tent is unavailable, so I have been learning how to germinate seeds directly in the soil without heat pads or grow lights.

Potting

After the seedlings in a small tray or six-pack have their true leaves, I move them individually either to soil in a garden or to larger cells or pots. While some seedlings are ready to transplant to the soil (for example, onions, spinach or chard), most require potting so that their root systems can develop.

Seedling mix

[A half-inch sieve for breaking up the clumps of the seeding mix]I'm using Sungro 3 organic seedling mix from Steuber's Distributing in Snohomish as the medium for planting seeds.

[Seeded cells in the larger pans]So I'll remember next year, here's the procedure:

	* I break up any clumps by sifting the mix through my half-inch sieve.

Transplanting seedlings

Directly to garden

I may transplant smaller plants such as spinach, chard, parsley, even cabbages directly to garden soil, assuming it's ready and a suitable time (and I have been able to harden them off). It takes planning to get these seeds ready when the soil is ready, so in the spring this applies to plants that tolerate cooler temperatures.
