Pruning grapevines

In their first years grape plants are “trained” by pruning. There are two methods of pruning: cane pruning and spur or cordon pruning.

This DVD Proper Methods for Pruning Grapevines, is a demonstration of the two methods of pruning grapevines: training to spurs and training to canes.

Rooting grape canes

Late in 2015 I was impressed by the production of local grapes by the owner of the farm and decided it might be interesting to have a grape vineyard. I cut some canes from the existing vines and learned about propagating the cuttings.

Soil

Generally, grape vines are tolerant of the fertility of their soil. However, most require soil that is well-drained.

Grapes tolerate a wide variety of soils but prefer a deep, well drained and only moderately rich soil with a pH around 6.3-6.8. Too rich a soil results in more vine growth and less fruit.

Training young vines

When to begin

Training needs to be done for each vine after its first season of growth to create the desired shape, but sometimes this gets delayed. Then it's necessary to re-train the vine so it can grow into the traditional form.

Grape types

Table grapes

Table grapes, or those you eat raw, are distinctly different from grapes used to make wine. They have a thin skin, and over the years, farmers have bred them to be seedless or have very small seeds.

Some grapes are grown from seeds, but table grapes are often seedless. These grapes are propagated by cloning: taking a cutting of a vine, dipping it in rooting hormone, and allowing it to root and grow into a new plant.

Grape varieties

Local

I began rooting canes from vines cut from the same area as the Farm vineyard. These had shown vigor among weeds and without any attention (watering or pruning) whatever. I assumed they were adapted to the soil, climate and conditions. So I have no idea what their variety is.
