Medic Mix

This is a cover crop from Territorial Seed Company containing alfalfa and clover (Medicago spp. + Trifolium spp.).

Territorial says:

This mix is one of the best choices for dryland cover cropping. Low growing (6-16 inches) and early maturing, it is a true annual that will complete its life cycle by August when planted in early spring. It can be planted as late as October for a winter and early spring cover in zones 6 and above. Makes an excellent mulch for orchards, vineyards, or between drip-irrigated vegetables. Medic is an outstanding smother crop, helping to control annual grassy weeds as well as broadleaf weeds such as pigweed and lambsquarter.

Tried at home

I planted some in a small raised bed at home. It seemed to germinate well and smother weeds pretty well. I intend to plant a some more in a garden in late September 2014 to serve as green manure.

At the garden

I planted Medic Mix on part of our Fall City garden. I planted where I expect to begin planting in spring of 2015. I'm thinking that this mix of clover and alfalfa will be easy to terminate early.

What I found is that the extra-severe cold we had in November and January killed the alfalfa and set the clover back, allowing weeds to get way ahead by planting time.

All-in-all, I didn't see a good reason to try Medic Mix again. It was slow to germinate and slow to get established. I look for more consistency in a cover crop.
