Line 1: Line 1:
 +==== American grapes ====

 +There are less than a dozen grape varieties that are native to America that were growing before Europeans found the Americas. Generally, they are categorized as Vitis labrusca. There are many hybrid cultivars of V. labrusca, some being crosses with V. vinafera, a species originating in European or Mediterranean countries.
 +
 +Typically consumed as table grapes, some varieties are suitable also for wine-making.
 +
 +Unlike European grapes (Vitis venafera), American grapes are resistant to the phylloxera root louse. Only hybrids of European grapes with American native grapes are suitable for growing in the United States.
