At the Farm

Moving out!

Damage from the farm animals and signs that these residents weren't going away led me to move all my gardening to the Fall City Garden downtown.

I told the owners of the Farm property that I was discontinuing my work there.

I asked them to allow me to move several of the ten grape vines at the Farm, some of which were in their first season. They refused, saying that when I left they owned anything attached to the property.

Apparently, there were some hard feelings about my moving my gardening, which I didn't understand. But I saw no end to the presence of farm animals, So I left the vines standing in the garden. Later events showed that more cattle were being housed there.

I disassembled the hoop house and collected the hoses and drip line paraphernalia and took everything not attached there over to the Garden.

At the Garden

Hoop House

I brought in the disassembled hoop house, and re-assembled it in the Garden.

Added low tents

Also I added two low tents because I was pleased with the success of growing peppers in them.

Dale as go-gardener

A friend Dale joined me at the Fall City garden, taking over half of the area and planting a long row of dahlias across the front near the street, as well as a nice selection of winter squash, beans and corn.

Strawberry harvest

Development of strawberry beds over the past several years led to the largest harvest of strawberries to day. I invited neighbors to glean the beds.

Rooting grape canes

When I pruned the grape vines at the Farm I collected canes suitable for rooting. Starting in pots in the greenhouse at home, I prepared more than 20 canes. (At least, I could remove the cuttings from there!) this is an intensive process detailed at rooting grape canes.

Temperature data

A professional housing for temp/humidity sensorsOriginal homemade temperature/humidity sensor housing Both at the Fall City Farm and at the Garden I had collected temperature and humidity data, both inside and outside the hoop house. Outside data came from a weather station I installed nearby. I made the first housing from Styrofoam plates from a takeout restaurant. Inside data from sensors housed inside the housing.

I read the inside sensors (Hobo temp/humidity bluetooth device) using an app on my phone. In the end all the data went into a spreadsheet that I use to judge the growing conditions in that area.

A thought about moving

We considered moving our gardening activity to a different location away from Fall City because the landowner there intended to sell the property. The possible location (Monte Vista) was enticing because of its natural setting and views of Mount Si. The owner there took back the offer, which was appropriate given our change in plans in 2021, the next year.

It was a good year!

Moving from the Farm to downtown Fall city greatly reduced our vegetable production. But it was still a good year:

  • I harvested almost 1,600 pounds of produce.
  • I donated over 1,400 pounds to two local food banks.
  • I gave a hundred pounds to family and friends.
  • We added to our freezer with vegetables and have supplies of winter squash.

It comes as no surprise to me that my body is tired. I was working in the gardens well into October. I am taking time to recuperate.
