This is magic stuff that provides a medium that the soil's micro-organisms use to loosen the soil and provide helpful “stuff” the improves fertility. I find it truly amazing how much looser and lighter soil is after applying quality compost.

I make compost, hoping to have a batch ready to go in a year, so making it is crucial - some compostable materials don't decompose that quickly.
